Description

Nice family-run pub with wooden floors and exposed brickwork in a canalside setting. The pub serves home-cooked food and beers from Hall and Woodhouse including Badger Best, Sussex and Fursty Ferret. Large garden at the front of the pub overlooking the river. Seats at the rear of the pub overlooking the canal.

The pub is located on a restored section of the Wey and Arun canal which is popular with walkers. There are plans to re-open the canal completely but it stops at the pub at present.

The Onslow Arms

How to get there

By car, Loxwood is a small village between Rudgwick and Ifold. The village is about 3 miles [4.8 km] from the A281 Horsham to Guildford road. Loxwood is signposted from the A281 at Bucks Green. The pub itself is on the B2133.

Cycling - the best mixed on/off-road route is to take the Downs Link bridleway from Christs Hospital or from Slinfold. For example, join the Downs Link at Slinfold and cycle north towards Rudgwick until you get to the A281. Turn left for a short distance [less than 0.5 miles] along the road and turn left just before [or just after] the Fox Inn.

Cycle along this normally quiet country road for about 3 miles [4.8 km] past the Mucky Duck pub on the right until you get to Loxwood. Turn left heading south and the pub is a short distance [less than 0.5 miles] on the left.

If you want a quiet on-road route, cycle towards the A264/A29 Five Oaks intersection from Slinfold. At the A29, turn left and, after 0.5 miles [0.8 km], turn right [signposted for 'The Haven' and 'Lower Lodge shooting grounds']. Continue along this road for about 3 miles [4.8 km] to the A281. Turn left and cycle a short distance until the Fox Inn, then continue as above.

Suggested cycling routes from here

Come out of the pub and face the canal. Turn right and cycle along the canal bridleway path towards Drungewick and there is another bridlepath which connects up with the Blue Ship at the Haven.

or continue south along the B2133 towards the Cricketers Arms at Wisborough Green or the Limeburners Arms near Billingshurst.

I have been to this pub a number of times and have been pleased on every occasion. There is a good play area for our children and we have always been very happy with the food. The staff are friendly and helpful. I have never heard any swearing, although we do always sit outside.

This pub had friendly staff and surprisingly good food that was well priced and served promptly. Unfortunately, this was all spoilt by a large (local?) family who were loud, swearing, and acting obnoxiously. One of them asked if they could smoke indoors because it was raining outside! They basically made half the pub unbearable for anyone within earshot of them. If only the publican would bar some of these 'regulars', then it would be an ideal county pub in a lovely location...

I visited the Onslow Arms last weekend and have to disagree with the last two comments. We had a lovely roast lunch served by cheerful and attentive staff, which was great on such a wet and dreary day. My husband, myself and my two children were made to feel very welcome and did not notice anyone swearing at the bar, just a lovely warm atmosphere and friendly locals.

Completely agree with previous comments. Could be great but is usually frequented by a few swearing drinkers. Food well....leave it with you. The pub is crying out for a good chef, caring owners, and a refurbishment. Once the canal work is finished, this pub would be a gold mine for the right owners and chef. Someone will wake up one day and sort this place out.

What a disappointment. Lovely Georgian building on the canal but very average to bad pub grub, average beer, and a group of rather intimidating tattooed gentlemen f---ing and blinding, and propping up the bar. What a shame, it has so much potential! We won't be going there again.

I had my birthday meal here on Friday and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality and price of the meals. The beer choice was good and the draught cider is excellent. You would have to search hard to find staff as nice and helpful as the staff here. We will be back!

We had a Sunday lunch of roast beef with all the trimmings for £7.25 on Mothering Sunday and the staff were very polite and efficient. The service was very quick and we waited no more than 15 minutes from placing the order to having the food served on the table. We felt it was very good food at a reasonable price.

A nice position alongside the canal, with good gardens. The food was a bit disappointing, old fashioned pub grub and mediocre ploughmans, but we've been spoiled by too many trips to the Lamb Inn at Lambs Green. Only two of three beers were available, which was a shame. Some nice walks and rides in the area, particularly along the canal, so it's well placed for a bit of quick re-fuelling.

Very well located by the canal but pretty average in its food offering, quality of ale and overall ambience. Staff are friendly enough. A decent beer garden for kids is a plus. A pub I'd visit because of its convenience rather than anything else.
