Description
For a small village, Rusper has a couple of decent pubs and The Star is one of them. Originally built in 1486, always a pub, it has now expanded into neighbouring cottages. There is a priest hole [a small passage for Catholic priests to hide during the reign of Elizabeth I] in one corner of the pub that leads on to the roof, a large inglenook fireplace .... and a wishing well. Lots of history then...!
Cosy wood-beamed bar areas with old carpenter's planes displayed. Beers served are Greene King Abbot Ale, Fullers London Pride and Shepherd Neame Spitfire. Wide range of food. No garden but there is a paved patio area.

How to get there
By car
Rusper is approximately 5-6 miles north of Horsham. It's not on a main road but you can get there on country lanes from the Capel A24 roundabout.
Cycling
Take Rusper road past Littlehaven station. After the station, straight ahead at next roundabout to the A264 north bypass. Straight over the bypass roundabout [can be busy]. Follow this road up a steep hill [it's all downhill on the way back] for 2.8 miles [4.5 km] to Rusper itself. The Star pub is at the T-junction on the right.
Suggested cycling routes from here
Explore the small, quiet country lanes between Horsham and Dorking. Try the Six Bells at Newdigate on the way to Brockham, which has a typical village green atmosphere. Not many hills .... ideal for that Sunday afternoon cycle ride..
Other pubs near here
Try the Plough - also in Rusper. The Royal Oak is only a mile or two from Rusper village. The Holmbush Inn in Faygate is also close.

A fantastic village pub. My husband and I have been for lunch as well as dinner and have taken our daughter as well. You are welcomed with a warm and friendly atmosphere and they catered for us as a family very well. I would recommend this pub to anyone wanting a gathering with family or friends accompanied by great food, drink and service.

Visited for Sunday roast, dinner was great, staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The pub itself is charming, warm and welcoming. Great value for money, would definitely recommend to anyone. The only drawback is we don't live in the village!

The previous reviewer must have been to a different pub! This village pub has retained its character and serves up the best gastro food in the area. Costa and his staff are superb.

A ruination of what was once a typical village pub. The food was at best ordinary and the beer poor. An experience not to be repeated.
