Description
The Scarlett Arms is a picturesque, white painted pub, in a secluded position, with a cosy bar and three interconnecting small rooms with an old-fashioned but charming ambience. Flagstone floors, oak beams, wooden benches and large fireplace. The pub was refurbished in 2007. There is an attractive garden at the front with large industrial machine as an unusual plant stand.

How to get there
By car
Find Walliswood from the A29 between Horsham/Warnham and Dorking. Driving north, turn left [signposted Oakwoodhill] after Warnham. Follow the road, past the Punchbowl Inn, and you will reach Walliswood after a mile or so.
Cycling
Walliswood is a small hamlet about 1.4 miles [2.2 km] west of the A29 between Horsham and Dorking. Cycle from Horsham
-> Warnham and then to the Rowhook roundabout on the A29. Take the Rowhook Road and follow this uphill past the Chequers where the road bends right.
After another 2.25 miles [4 km], at the second junction, follow the road to the right and then next left [signposted Walliswood] where the pub is 0.25 mile [0.4 km] on the right. This is about 10-11 miles [16-17 km] from Horsham.
Suggested routes from here
Quiet country lanes in this part of Surrey between Oakwoodhill, Ockley and Ewhurst. The A29 can be busy but you can avoid it for the most part.
Other pubs in this area include the Wheatsheaf at Ellen's Green, the Parrot at Forest Green and the Punchbowl Inn at Oakwoodhill.

I have to say that I think this pub is a disappointment. It's a great building and has been a great pub in the past. It's modernisation isn't too bad, although it has that interior designer pub feel which lacks individualism. I would say if you want a pint and nothing more, they keep the beer well, though it's exactly the same choice of beers that you can find at the Punchbowl just around the corner. The food was a major disappointment, tiny portions, hardly seasoned, and overpriced. This pub has stiff competition in the area from the likes of the Parrot, the Punchbowl, and the Chequers, and falls behind them for food. To think that five or six years ago it was one of the best pubs in the area, it's a bit of a let-down for what should be a fantastic pub.

Just read the previous review, so I thought it might level things if I say I have been to this pub three times and always enjoyed the food, the beer, and the ambience. I was here last August Bank Holiday Monday 2009 and it is such a lovely, quality old pub with flagstone floors, four smallish rooms and nice front garden. The two ales I drank were gorgeous [Badger ales]. The food was exquisite but left me hungry. The service was very good. My 56th favourite pub in the country.

Would like to comment on the food but, unfortunately, have been turned away hungry both times I have tried to eat here! The first time we got a bit lost trying to find the pub, so turned up at 2.30 just as they had stopped serving. The second occasion, we arrived in plenty of time but was told that there was no food left. It wasn't really this that annoyed me but rather the condescending manner in which I was told "well it is a Bank Holiday" as if I was a moron for expecting there to be food left! My reply "perhaps you should take in the boards outside announcing that you are serving food" was met with a blank stare. On both occasions we nipped down the road to The Parrot where we were welcomed with fresh food, prompt friendly service and a lively atmosphere. I won't be trying the Scarlett Arms again!

We had a fantastic meal at the Scarlett. Food was delicious with a great variety of things to choose from. Had a wonderful monkfish dish and the most amazing mussels in a curry sauce. The waitress was charming and the refurbishment was great - really brightened the place up, just what the pub needed. Well worth the trip.
