Description

Delightful, traditional pub in a very quiet rural location. The Royal Oak is a black and white, timbered, 14th century building with brick floors, low beams and large fireplace. It has been a pub for 200 years and is full of character. There is a collection of corkscrews, and other unusual items, hanging up behind the bar. Beers, Harveys and at least one guest beer, are served straight from the cask.

Food is mainly sandwiches and Ploughmans. However, homemade soups are served in the winter. Nice garden at the front.

The pub is a regular stopping point for several clubs including the London Fire Brigade cycle club and a veteran cycle club [the bikes, not the riders!]

The Royal Oak has been in the Good Beer Guide since the start.

How to get there

By car
Wineham is a small village south east of Cowfold and north of Henfield.

Cycling
To avoid the busy A281 and A272 roads, cycle out of Horsham into Comptons Lane and pick up Hammerpond Road going east. Cycle past Horsham Rugby Club at Coolhurst and up and down a couple of short, but steep, hills past Bucks Head [very nice setting next to the golf course] and on to the intersection with the B2110 opposite the Wheatsheaf pub. Straight ahead over the cross-roads and then next right [signposted Warninglid] before Slaugham.

Cycle to Warninglid, then straight over the cross-roads and along a narrow country lane for about 2.5 miles [4 km] until the busy A272. Cross over into Wineham Lane [very quiet] and the pub is 1.5 miles [2.4 km] on the right.

Suggested cycling routes from here

Country lanes round Wineham and north towards Warninglid. Bridleways west of the pub between Kent Street and Shermanbury.

The Hare and Hounds in Cowfold is only a few miles/km from the Royal Oak.

Found the pub by chance and decided to stop for lunch because it looked welcoming and the car park was pretty full - always a good sign! The lunch was superb: lots of slices of delicious cold roast pork on a bed of potato salad drizzled with piccalilli. Simple but very effective. Need to take friends there to try out the Ploughman's which looked fantastic, served on a thick wooden platter - like something from a French film set! The service was good and very friendly too.

Just dropped in here for a late lunch. The fire was roaring, staff friendly and the home-made winter vegetable soup was delicious. My husband's sliced-bread sandwich was made with home-roasted beef. Plain food, limited choice, but done very well and good value. We'll definitely be going back!

On reading some very good reviews about this pub, we decided to visit and have a beer and sandwich before going on a walk. When the sandwiches arrived, we could not believe it, we had paid £2.75 each for a tuna and a corned beef sandwich. Not only was the bread supermarket-sliced, but the garnish was a sad piece of cucumber sitting on top. The sign outside says freshly cut sandwiches. I hope passing tourists don't see this and hope for an appetizing lunch...stop first at Tescos!

Wonderful. A warm and inviting pub, perfect to enjoy a great beer and warm company. The sandwiches are also very good.
