Description
The Plough is a freehouse pub with very low beams and flagstone floor. Beers include Fullers London Pride and two guest beers. Good food and a seasonal menu [changed every three months]. Cosy atmosphere.
There is an outside front seating area and a recently refurbished beer garden at the rear. The attic rooms are two function/dining rooms on the first floor and are over 500 years old. One room is for 30 people and the other is a private dining room for 12.
NEWS April 2009: The pub is under new ownership.
Favourite pub pastime ... watch people bang their heads on the low ceiling .. and then do it yourself!

How to get there
By car
Rusper is approximately 5-6 miles north of Horsham. It's not on a main road but you can get there on country lanes from the Capel A24 roundabout.
Cycling
Take Rusper road past Littlehaven station. After the station, straight ahead at next roundabout to the A264 north bypass. Straight over the bypass
roundabout [can be busy]. Follow this road up a steep hill [it's all downhill on the way back] for 2.8 miles [4.5 km] to Rusper itself. At the T-junction next to the Star pub turn left and the Plough is 100m on the right opposite the church [why is there a pub always opposite a church?!]
PS If you want, you can stop at the Star as well.
Suggested cycling routes from here
Explore the small, quiet country lanes between Horsham and Dorking. Try the Six Bells at Newdigate on the way to Brockham, which has a typical village green atmosphere. Not many hills .... ideal for that Sunday afternoon cycle ride.
Other pubs near here
The Star Inn is just down the road. The Royal Oak is only a mile or two from Rusper village. The Holmbush Inn in Faygate is also close.

We emailed the pub four or five times before visiting to ask if they had a vegan option and they said that there were two vegetarian options and both could be made vegan. We also rang a week before and two days before when we were given the same information after the person who answered the telephone spoke directly to the chef. However, when we arrived my friend was told that neither of the vegetarian courses that were on the menu could be made vegan. This was very disappointing but my friend was happy to eat what was suggested, which was a roasted pepper stuffed with curried rice. It was a single red pepper stuffed with about two table spoons of rice and then surrounded by lettuce. My friend asked the manageress and said that she was expecting a full course and would have hoped for something more. The manageress was condescending and rude and singled out my friend in front of the whole table. The food was overpriced and the service was also poor. I will never be going here again. All in all we had a terrible time. I'm sorry for the essay but as you might be able to tell I am very upset with the service.

Whilst this pub has a good selection of beers and wines and appears popular as a place to just have a drink, it's the food that is the main attraction. There are dining tables set out next to the bar along with tables upstairs in the attic rooms. There is also an area that can be used for private dining. The menu is varied and interesting and changes every few months or so. The service has always been excellent and it has a very enjoyable atmosphere. Certainly worth a visit!

After driving around various Beefeaters and such-like trying to find someone to cater for our party of seven for Sunday lunch, we wound up at the Plough and enjoyed an excellent meal in lovely surroundings. Well done landlord and staff!

Six off us had dinner on Saturday night in the attic room. The food was excellent and the staff very friendly. I would recommend it to everyone.

It is many years since I had a meal in this pub, albeit that I'm fairly local, and I was not disappointed. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff pleasant and helpful. I was delighted to see a well set table, more than one set of cutlery and not wrapped in a paper napkin! The glasses were clean and the napkin placed in one of them was a linen type of material.
Our food was well presented and other than one starter...hot. The 'starter' was replaced promptly when our complaint was registered to a member of staff. The food was not the cheapest 'pub grub' and, if anything, I think the desserts are overpriced at approximately £5 each. However, for a really good meal, I would certainly go back again and recommend this pub to others.
My one minor concern was the smell of burning fat drifting into the bar through the constantly open door to the kitchen but, as my partner pointed out, perhaps it is more noticeable since the smoking ban!

It was a fitting end to our two weeks in England to have dinner and a few drinks at this lovely pub on a Saturday evening. The local patrons were very friendly and all too happy to tell us about the attractions in the area. I only wish we had started, rather than finished, our trip here.
The food was good and portions were generous. Unfortunately, due to an early flight, we had to leave before the band arrived. Next time in the UK we'll be sure to plan a longer stopover here.
