Description

The Limeburners Arms is in a converted row of 16th century cottages and was originally located on the Wey and Arun canal which is now a hundred yards away. The canal is now being restored and is nicknamed "London's lost route to the sea". The pub sells Gales beers including the deceptively strong HSB [Horndean Special Bitter] and a range of pub food from a cosy bar with large fireplaces, bar billiards table and stone floors.

There is an attractive garden at the front with childrens' play area at one end. There is a campsite behind the pub.

How to get there

By car
The pub is about a mile west of Billingshurst, just adjacent to the A272. It is signposted from the A272 but it's easy to miss.

Cycling
Cycle to Billingshurst and then through the village [this avoids most of the bypass]. Take the A272 [can be busy] west towards Petworth and Wisborough Green. After about a mile [0.7 km] just before a sharp right bend, turn left on to the B2133 [towards Adversane] and the pub is on the left.

A good route to Billingshurst along some quiet roads is via Southwater to Barns Green. From here cycle south following the railway until you get to a staggered junction. Go straight across and then take the next left, before the A29, to the A272 and then right to Billingshurst.

Suggested cycling routes from here

Continue along the A272 towards Wisborough Green and the Cricketers and then on to the Half Moon at Kirdford or the Onslow Arms at Loxwood.

Turn right out of the pub back towards the A272, turn left and immediately right on to Rowner Road, and cycle north to the Blue Ship.

Had a great time when we stayed at the campsite in 1994. Looking forward to visiting again on our way back home from Ireland in early June.

Excellent venue, service and menu at very reasonable prices. We can recommend the curry and sausages and mash.

13 of us arrived for lunch following a cold muddy walk and received a friendly welcome from both the landlord and the chef. There was a roaring log fire and the food and service were excellent. It was nice to go to an 'ordinary' pub that hasn't been tarted up. There was only one homemade pudding, which was disappointing, but the main meals and good service more than made up for it. Will definitely go back.

Very friendly atmosphere, good beers and excellent food. I had ribeye steak and my wife had the trio of pork sausages with mash and roasted leeks.

Went here for lunch today and was very disappointed. The jacket potato was tiny with hardly any stilton or bacon and the side salad was tired and uninspiring. At £5.25 I thought this to be overpriced. No wonder the place was empty! Much better value to be had elsewhere.

A proper pub with a convivial public bar which was still full after the eating section had emptied. Good beer with simple, well-cooked pub food, and very friendly, helpful staff who can give personal recommendations on the desserts available!

A very old and beautiful pub [possibly circa 1650] located on a back road between Adversane and the A272 between Petworth and Billingshurst. All aspects of this pub are first class and reasonably priced. In particular, they have staff who really do know what they're doing. Tip: try their sandwiches! They also have a good camping and caravan site nearby. To the tourist, good all-round value for money.

Recently did a three mile circular walk from this pub so we ended up trying the food, which was excellent! The only problem we found at lunchtime was, as the beer garden filled up, the cooking and food preparation time increased. We did have to go back inside after a while, to see what our apple crumbles were up to! They did arrive eventually and tasted great. Although this pub is in a pretty location, sitting outside at this time of year, you do have to endure the noise of the passing lorries!
