Description

Next to the attractive village green in a typical cricket-playing village setting, the Cricketers Arms dates from the 16th century. It has a large iron-stove open fireplace, with long string of conkers hanging next to it, and wooden block floors with brick walls. There is a large old Whitbread brewery sign on the outside of the pub.

Beers served include Fullers London Pride, Youngs bitter and Greene King IPA. Live music on a Thursday. Classic car rallies regularly use the pub as a stopping point.

The uniquely British sport of lawnmower racing was established after a meeting in the pub in 1973 and there are regular races in the local area. The lawnmower racing group still meets in the pub.

How to get there

By car
Wisborough Green is a village west of Billingshurst - it is about 10 miles from Horsham.

Cycling
A good route to Billingshurst along some quiet roads is via Southwater to Barns Green, perhaps visiting the Queens Head? From Barns Green, cycle south following the railway until you get to a staggered junction. Go straight across and then take the next left, before the A29, to the A272 and then right to Billingshurst.

Cycle through the village [this avoids most of the bypass]. Take the A272 [can be busy] west towards Petworth. You can stop at the Limeburners Arms to break the journey. At Wisborough Green, turn right just before the village green and cricket pitch and the pub is on the right, set back from the road, at the end of the green.

Suggested routes from here

From the pub, cycle straight ahead, with the village green on your left, along some quiet country lanes towards Kirdford and the Foresters Arms and Half Moon Inn.

Or turn right from the pub and cycle to the Onslow Arms at Loxwood.

Great pub. Friendly and very helpful staff. The food is just excellent! We often visit, and each time is as good as the last.

Harvey's beer! Need I say more? Sorry to hear about the other folk not having a good experience, it's not usually like that. I eat here quite a lot and always find something I like. Craig's soups are always great and the chocolate fudge brownies are awesome.

Fantastic tasting food, all freshly cooked and served in very generous portions. Good selection of wines and beers. Food theme nights are not to be missed. Quiz nights are on Tuesday with a very attractive quiz mistress! Live music on a Thursday always pulls in a friendly crowd of all ages.

I have just read with dismay the comments from some people about the Cricketers. It's an absolutely great place to eat and drink. We go to the quiz nights in the winter and it has to be the friendliest, most welcoming pub I know. The food is great and Craig is an excellent chef. We're just heading off there for a Thai night - can't wait!!

Rubbish. The specials board is typical of the type of meals that you eat at home, not very "special". Staff are more concerned with talking to each other than the customers. Won't be rushing back there any time soon, used to go quite a bit but not good now. It seems to have changed a lot and not for the better!

Cannot understand Danny's previous comments. We visited the Cricketers for a meal yesterday evening. As soon as we went up to the bar, we were welcomed from at least three bar staff, all seemingly keen to assist. Service was quick and friendly, the food was excellent quality, good value for money, well presented, and of very generous proportions on huge plates. It was a Thursday and we started early in the evening but, in no time at all, the eating area was full with customers. It says a lot for an establishment if it is favoured by the locals. We shall be back!

The menu is uninteresting and drab with many meals involving chips on the specials board! Good quality beer but kept in average and inconsistent condition. Staff are just not interested in customer service and without personality. The clientele has gone downhill as well. I had the misfortune of visiting on a Friday night for a meal. Just terrible, I don't remember it being like this, it reminds me of a football pub in East London.

This pub is in a lovely setting in an idyllic village, a stone's throw away from the village green, but it has taken a turn for the worse since the last time I visited the area about two years ago. Very disappointed.
