Description

Enter the cosy bar of the 17th century Queens Head through a small entrance hall. The pub has four fireplaces including a large inglenook where rumour says that smugglers used to hide their contraband - there is a road nearby called Smugglers Way. There is an attractive garden, with flower covered pergola, at the back of the pub.

Beers include Fullers London Pride, King and Barnes Sussex and Brakspears Bitter and the pub does a carvery lunch at the weekends.

The Queens Head

How to get there

By car
Barns Green is a small village between Southwater and Billingshurst.

Cycling from Horsham town center, take the Worthing Road [B2237] and turn right at the Boars Head pub. Follow the road up the hill and round to the left, under the A24 and past Christ's Hospital entrance on the right. After another 1.1 miles [1.8 km] you will see the Bax Castle on the left. Turn right at the next junction, just after the old railway bridge, and follow the winding road to Barns Green. After you pass under another railway bridge, turn left at the next T-junction and the pub is on the left - it is signposted from the T-junction.

Suggested cycling routes from here

From the pub, turn left and at the railway line turn right towards Billingshurst and the Limeburners.

or turn right from the pub along Plumtree Cross Lane towards Itchingfield. After Itchingfield, turn right towards Christ's Hospital and the Downs Link bridleway heading south.

or there are some quiet country roads south of Barns Green between Southwater and Brooks Green. Visit the George and Dragon at Dragon's Green.

What used to be a lovely pub is now really not worth a visit. The landlord is one of the most unfriendly people I have ever met and the beer quality is not too great. As for the dog, I'm contacting Environmental Health.

I recently visited this pub with my husband and son. We had a Sunday roast [which was a carvery] which I must say was appalling! The meal looked like it had been left out for days. We were not offered anything else other than the carvery and the children's menu. My son was making some noise because I had given him something he did not like and it was hot! Also, there was a health and safety problem because when we were eating our meal, the dog was wandering around the restaurant area. Not nice!

A couple of weeks later, we returned to the pub and had a couple of drinks only to be told that if we could not keep our son quiet, we would have to leave the pub because of the pub diners. My husband replied "you never complained a couple of weeks ago when we were spending money on food in here".

I would like to suggest that somebody from the brewery visits because they would surely advise the manager to go on on a health and safety course, and a customer service course and maybe learn how to smile and be nice to people. This pub is a disgrace and needs some better management. The only reason we return to this pub is because we have good friends that drink there! The two women that work there are very nice though.

This pub is the hub of the village and deserves to be better. It's up for sale at too much money but maybe the villagers should club together to form a cooperative and buy it? Surely there must be 120 people out there willing to invest £1000 each to retain our great local and get rid of the miserable bloke who is killing our pub! Even living in the village, I don't go there, it's too depressing.

I live in the local area of this pub and would never eat the pub food - very poor. One of the worst landlords I've ever come across. Reason for still using the pub is that the people who drink there are very friendly

I have lived in Barns Green most of my life and the local pub was a hub of the community until the current landlord destroyed that. He is rude, grumpy, and very anti-children. And the food is appalling, I had a salad that was covered in bits of grit and you would never guess what they told me when I took it back. It was not grit, it was pepper! My mother and I have been chefs for many years, so for a cop-out like that, you have to feel sorry for the bloke. I would never go back and recommend that you don’t bother either, because there is a fantastic pub at Dragons Green called the George and Dragon.

Nice garden, pity about the pub and the landlord!

I have just recently camped at Summers Pond and visited the Queens Head. General overview good, the pub's attire is a bit shabby, landlord grumpy, dog seems to have an anger problem, locals lovely. Was served by lovely young lad, quite strapping, very professional and polite, I believe his name was Richard. Will camp in Barns Green again, what a lovely village.

Recently moved to village, welcome could be better but I always get a smile from the landlord and the landlady, pleasant enough. Food not very good, but the dog I don't mind. In truth, as an ex-publican, I think there is vast room for improvement and, as the only pub in the village (with a camping and fishing site on the doorstep) these two need to pull their socks up and the potential would be enormous.

The landlord is a tourist attraction; it's the only reason that I can think of why people keep going there!

Despite the negative features of dog and landlord, the staff were exemplary, especially one, I believe his name was James. He deserves a pay rise, most amiable young chap. Food was average, but beer good. I may return.

The pub is now run by the most miserable landlord I have ever met. His wife seems ok but cannot really understand what she is saying. And the food, well I would rather go to Burger King. And if you take your children, please beware of the dog. Not nice. At all

The landlord is the rudest man I have met. Went in for a meal, very bland, won't be going back. My colleagues and I work locally and visit regularly at lunch times. Well, at least we used to. The landlord has alienated about 20 regular customers due to his ignorance. He has not got a clue and has ruined what used be a good boozer!

The staff were very helpful considering there were eight adults and three children in our group. Food was good, although there was a shortage of duck in the meal, but plenty of lettuce. Beer was good though.

The waiters and waitresses were very friendly. The food was great, we were impressed. The pub owner seemed very grumpy and rude to customers. His wife was hardly understandable. We will not be returning in a hurry.

Beware the wrath of the landlord. For goodness sake don't complain that the lager is flat - you know it's your mouth! On no account ask for the sauce that's included on the menu - you know you're far too demanding. Never suggest that the crisps are stale - you've been dunking them in your beer haven't you? And don't bring your beloved children or dogs into the pub - you have to admit you're just trying to be extra specially annoying. Do any of this and you may be barred ... if you're lucky.

My family decided to visit the local pub and have something to eat. New owners have taken over since I was there last - and they seemed friendly. We ordered food and there was quite a wait, but the wine was going down well, so that didn't bother us!

The starters were served but the chef had forgot to put the mushrooms and cheese under the grill so we had to return them. The main courses were very tasty but our garlic bread was mouldy. We asked the waiter to notify the chef - hoping the chef would come out to apologize. Instead, the pub owner came over, was very defensive, saying the garlic was fresh etc, and kept arguing with us. In the end, he went away and came back with £1 refund for the bread. What an insult! Any good owner would have apologised and said 'Would you like a drink on the house' or....

It's a shame, we are certainly not keen to return, and we will notify all friends and family of this rude man!!

What is the landlord doing here? So not nice, it's unreal. I agree about the dog and to try the club up the road, full of smiles.

This used to be a lovely pub until new owners took over. The food was vile and the staff were not friendly. Try the social club nearby where service is much better.

Visited the Queens Head after many years. What was once a great friendly pub is now run by the most miserable landlord you could meet. They think more of the dog [which seems to have the run of the pub including the bar, kitchen and dining area] than the customers. Will not be going back there in a hurry.

Went in for a meal - waitress who served us was lovely, very friendly, and there it ended! The miserable bloke behind the bar who was the landlord should consider a career change! How unfriendly can you be to customers spending money in your business? Food was bland, atmosphere was nil. Can anyone give me directions to the Boars Head please...?
