Description
The Hare and Hounds is a traditional freehouse pub selling 5-6 different beers from several Sussex breweries including Harveys and King and Company. There is usually at least one other local beer and it was Hepworths Summer Ale when I visited.
The pub has a stone-floored bar area and a dining area to one side. There is a bar billiards table and fireplace. There is a regular quiz night and live music on Bank Holiday weekends. All food is home-cooked.

How to get there
By car
Cowfold is on the A281 Horsham to Brighton Road - between Mannings Heath and Henfield.
Cycling
The best off-road route is to take the Downs Link bridleway [south of Horsham] to Partridge Green. Leave the Downs Link path and cycle through Partridge Green village to Shermanbury. Turn left on the A281 and the pub is on the right after approximately 2 miles [3 km].
The shortest route from Horsham is to cycle along the A281 Brighton Road [this can be a busy road] past the Dun Horse Inn at Mannings Heath, then through Lower Beeding, and on to Cowfold. The pub is on the A281 Henfield Road - a few hundred meters south of Cowfold village.
Suggested cycling routes from here
There are some bridleways south of the pub towards the Royal Oak at Wineham. You can also cycle on-road to Wineham via the B2116 south of Shermanbury.
or, cycle through Cowfold and along the A272 west towards the A24. Take the first left towards the Windmill at Littleworth. It's only a few miles/km from the Hare and Hounds.

We went to the H&H last night for a meal. Food was lovely, so much ham with my ham, egg and chips! I've been going to the pub for about four years now, my partner Pete used to be a regular when he lived in the village. It's always been a lovely place with good food and the staff are always welcoming and there's a good gathering of regulars. The open fire is lovely in the winter, the toilets are always spotless and overall it's a pleasure to travel the hour it takes us to the Hare five or six times a year. Proper old-fashioned country pub.

It seems that reviews are mixed. My personal experience is that the pub food can be cold at times. My steak was overdone and late in coming. The bar staff were unfriendly and the wine was average and overpriced. Luckily I was only visiting for a few days but so sad to see such a lovely located pub fail on both the food and wine.

I really think some people go about with their eyes shut. Some comments are completely out of order. The beer is not overpriced at £3.20 per pint, there is a good selection and the staff are helpful and friendly. We now have a superb landlady who always makes sure that customers are satisfied. The food is unsurpassed with the menu changing at regular intervals. The professional chef prepares daily specials which are a delight. The proof is that the pub is constantly full with a good atmosphere. I recommend the Hare and Hounds unreservedly.

Unfortunately, it seems that consistency is a real issue. Beers can be bland and overpriced and the food has no real imagination. As a villager who fraternises the pub quite often, it's sad to see the owner make it so unfriendly when so many past landlords made it such a pleasure.

Just had possibly the best pub, if not the best, meal I've ever had at the Hare and Hounds. The food was absolutely delicious and was checked by the chef that it was to our satisfaction and the service was charming from all staff. The food was fairly priced and worth every penny. A warm, inviting friendly pub with good food and drink suitable for people of any age to come and enjoy. Will be recommending to all my family and friends.
Score
I would say that this is a typical village pub. I was disappointed with the limited choice of ale and the over-inflated price. The food was adequate but it would have been nice to see more customers.

Great welcome and lovely staff. Very polite and service was great. Food was fantastic and we finished with clean plates all round. We have recommended this pub to friends and we will definitely be back soon. Keep up the good work.

I totally agree with Graham's comments. The staff can be ignorant and huffy at times. You feel more like an intruder rather than a guest. The dishwasher is always a problem and does put you off your beer.
Score
Nice pub, but disappointed by the lack of friendliness shown to us. Very much a local pub which may explain the lack of attention to passing tourists.

I'm a regular customer for food and drink and have never had a bad experience and the bar staff are very polite! I don't agree with the previous review from Graham Thompson, as the landlady has worked very hard to get the pub to the very high standards they are at at this present time! I look forward to enjoying another pint at this wonderful pub!
Score
Good beer but not excellent. Bar staff were at best of times nonchalent and rude in my opinion. Dishwasher fumes mar the taste of the beer and ambience.

The most welcoming and friendly house for the well travelled and weary customer in the world!
