Description
I lived in Horsham for about five years before I discovered this pub tucked away in a row of houses just off Brighton Road. It is a friendly, charming, local pub with slate floors, low ceilings, bar billiards table and large fireplace. English, Irish and other sporting flags decorate the ceiling. It is one of the few pubs in Horsham selling Greene King IPA.
There is a large boules area [the pub will tell you the rules if you don't know] in the garden and regular tournaments are held. The garden also has a BBQ area. The pub organises a sponsored dog pub crawl - people have been known to borrow a dog for the day, just to take part! There is also a 'changing-of-the-hops' night, where the dried hops on the bar ceiling are changed for new ones every September.

How to get there
By car
The pub is in St Leonard's Road which is off the A281 Brighton Road.
Cycling
The shortest route from Horsham is to cycle out of town on Brighton Road.
Under the iron railway bridge, continue for approx 0.75 miles [1 km],
turn left into St Leonard's Road and the pub is on the left after
50 yards or so.
Suggested cycling routes from here
The pub is ideally situated for mountain biking through St Leonard's Forest. From the pub, turn left and then right, almost immediately, onto Hammerpond Road. Follow the road for 1.5 miles [2 km] until Roosthole car park. Turn left into the car park area and there is a track with wooden posts on the right which heads uphill into the forest.
NOTE: Please be aware that some tracks through the forest are footpaths. Treat other users with respect.
If you want a varied ride, Cartersledge Lane, heading north from the B2110 near Handcross, is also great. Another good pub near St Leonard's Forest is the Dragon at Colgate...

Absolutely fantastic. Travelled up from Dorset to this pub.. the welcome we had from the bar man Joe was perfect, the locals were nice and the food was out of this world. The chicken leek and ham pie was the best we have ever had. Nicest pub I have been to. Five star service, food and hospitality.. well done Joe.

After years of living only a mile away and never visiting this pub, I realise what a wasted set of years this was! Its new owners are a delight and the food is excellent, well presented and freshly cooked. There is a good selection of beers and the rear of the pub is ideal for a quiet time in the garden.
