Description
This pub is part of a row of 17th century cottages. It has a very nice wooded garden at the rear with a stream, crossed by a small bridge, flowing through it. At the front is a terraced area. The pub inside has a stone floor with large fireplace, log burning stove, and serves 4-5 different beers [for example, Fullers London Pride, W J King's Horsham Best and Harveys Best] from two bar areas.
The pub has its own website and the local area near the Black Horse also has a website - Copsale Hall

How to get there
By car
Nuthurst is approximately 1 mile from the A281 Brighton Road at Monks Gate.
Cycling
The most direct on-road route is to cycle out of Horsham
on the A281 Brighton Road past the Dun Horse Inn at Mannings Heath. Turn right at Monks Gate
[0.5 miles / 0.75 km after M Heath] and the pub is on the left after
1.1 miles / 1.75 km.
The best mixed off/on-road route is via Pedlars Way [end of Queensway] to Southwater and then join the Downs Link bridleway heading south. Leave the Downs Link at Copsale as the bridleway crosses the road and turn left signposted Maplehurst [1.25 miles / 2 km from Copsale]. Turn left at Maplehurst and the pub is on the right after 1.1 miles / 1.75 km.
Suggested cycling routes from here
There are some quiet country lanes in the triangle between Maplehurst - Southwater - Horsham
There is a bridleway just south of the pub which connects with some lanes between Cowfold and Maplehurst - visit the White Horse pub at Maplehurst. There is also a great bridleway from the Monks Gate - A281 T-junction up to and through Sedgwick Park [it's a bit tricky to follow at the end].
Or try the Bridge House Inn at Copsale.

I took my counselling team out for a special celebratory meal last Friday evening. We chose the Black Horse beacuse of its gluten-free option; one of our team has celiac disease. What a terrible waste of time and precious money. My G&T was swamped with tonic water; no I wasn't allowed to pour my own tonic! We waited ¾ hr for our orders to be taken and a further ½ hour for our food which was ghastly! My lamb shank was horribly overcooked as were the other dishes, and the vegetables were just thrown on the plate in a soupy mix that was supposed to be 'rosemary jus'. I don't care how many awards the pub is supposed to have - it's horrid.

Awful lunch, it took 2¼ hrs to complete the meal. There was only one person serving at the bar, taking orders, waiting on tables, cooking etc. Food was from average to practically inedible. A bit like Fawlty Towers, albeit the man running the show was remarkably good in the circus and apologised for the standard of service. However, not recommended.
PS: The pub charged £1 for tap water if you do not order a drink with your Times offer meal.

We visited for lunch on a quiet midweek day in February. We ordered loin of pork. Three pieces of very fatty, very thinly sliced pork arrived within 5 minutes of being ordered - hardly freshly cooked. It was accompanied by awful greasy rosti potatoes and limp overcooked vegetables with a strong reheated taste. Coffee with UHT carton of milk [we asked for small jug of fresh], overpriced and stale. Landlord has a very strange manner. Will never revisit.

Visited on a busy Sunday lunchtime. Sat in the garden, lovely setting. Food was fantastic, the sauce for the tuna steak complimented it perfectly. Staff friendly and welcoming. Will be back.

Awful really. Ordered three main courses for my family. It was the start of lunch and was not mega busy. My wife and mine came out within 10 mins and then it was another 15 mins before my son's lunch turned up! Asked for some salad cream and a teaspoon, didn't get either. Chocolate fudge cake was fantastic [bought in?] and apple pie uneatable!

Food quite good and the surroundings are nice but these were spoilt by the most rude and objectionable landlord I have ever had the misfortune to meet.

Dropped in over the Easter weekend. Very busy! Fantastic selection of ales and food was excellent and piping hot. Well done.

Found this pub in my AA Pub Guide for 2002. It was pick of the pubs! Obviously, gone downhill since then. Chose a Greek salad from the 'specials' (!) board. Cost nearly £8.00 and consisted of a bag of mixed lettuce with some feta cheese on top. Not an olive in sight! No dressing apart from the sachets plonked in front of us. We asked for some home-made dressing which was brought over. Did not taste terribly fresh. Ordered some coffee, which came with a carton of UHT milk in the saucer. How difficult is it to bring a small jug of milk from the kitchen?

I took two friends for a 'Telegraph' lunch and it was dreadful. The Shepherds pie was dried up and the apple crumble was so stodgy it was uneatable. Coffee at £1.70 a time was a laugh. Pubs like this should be using the scheme as a shop window but this one failed hopelessly. I shall not be returning.

We had a family evening dinner for about seven or eight of us. We all enjoyed the evening very much, the food was perfect, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. A much enjoyed evening.

Our lunch was the pits! A cramped table in a dark and dirty room. The food was uniformly horrible.

We went to the Black Horse for lunch a couple of Saturdays ago. The young waitress was very polite and helpful. We really enjoyed it and will be back!

My friend and I had fish and chips at this pub. It was truly a wonderful dining experience. I had the best glass of Merlot in a long time. It's too bad I'm from the USA and so far away because I'd go back again and again. It was simply great and the fish and chips were excellent.
